What is the Role of a Surgical Technologists?
Surgical technologists possess specialized expertise to assist surgeons during invasive operations and improve patient outcomes. Using their extensive medical knowledge and technical skills, they prepare operating rooms by arranging instruments, equipment, and supplies according to the surgical procedure. Surgical technologists have an in-depth understanding of anatomy, surgical procedures, and medical devices.
During operations, they work closely with the surgeon by passing instruments, preparing suture materials, and operating equipment while coordinating with the surgical team to ensure a safe, efficient procedure. They apply sterile and aseptic techniques before, during, and after surgery to prevent infections. With experience gleaned from participating in numerous complex operations, surgical technologists develop sharp critical thinking abilities to adeptly handle procedural changes and complications should they arise.
They play an integral role in the operating room by leveraging their clinical expertise and steady hands to anticipate the surgeon’s needs, maintain the sterile field, and ensure the availability of needed instruments and supplies to successfully complete procedures. Surgical technologists combine medical knowledge, technical skills, and surgical team collaboration to facilitate smooth operations and improve patient outcomes.
