What is the Role of a LPN?

A licensed practical nurse is a healthcare professional who provides basic medical and nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or physician. LPNs are instrumental in delivering hands-on patient care, monitoring health status, and ensuring patients are comfortable.

In their day-to-day duties, LPNs measure and record vital signs, assist with bathing, dressing and feeding patients, administer medications and injections, collect samples for testing, monitor catheters and IV drips, and much more. They have a strong understanding of human anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and pathology which allows them to carry out therapeutic care plans.

LPNs also closely observe patients, document progress notes, report status changes to the care team, and notify supervisors of any emergencies. With their personable bedside manner and caring approach, they offer patients and families emotional support and health education. Their versatile skill set and compassion make LPNs essential for providing well-coordinated patient-centered care.
